Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo (2019)

December 4, 2022 @ 16:00 - 18:00

We’re a little later posting this one but our next read will be Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo (2019).

“Girl, Woman, Other follows the lives of twelve very different people in Britain, predominantly female and black. Aged 19 to 93, they span a variety of cultural backgrounds, sexualities, classes and occupations as they tell the stories of themselves, their families, friends and lovers, across the country and through the years.”

It’s quite a long one page wise but by many accounts it’s a really absorbing, must-read. This novel has been widely lauded with prizes and recommendations, and for us it’s a great one for us to read with feminism and race in mind.

If you have the time Evaristo’s first non-fiction, Manifesto: On Never Giving Up (“a memoir in which she looks at her creativity through the prism of her heritage and life”) was also recommended at our last meeting.

We will meet at 16:00 at the community kitchen de peper, located in OT301 in Amsterdam (http://www.ot301.nl).

We’ll discuss the text for a couple of hours and then (for those who wish) enjoy a vegan meal (donation based).

If you want to join for dinner you need to call on the same day to reserve (0684781156) or you can sign up at the bar while you’re there.

De peper has a ramp and a large toilet.

If you have access needs regarding the event that you feel may not already be in place please get in contact with us so that we can do our best to incorporate these.

If you want to attend the session but money reasons make it difficult for you to get hold of the book we will try to help.
