Voor onze eindexamenfilm over seksueel geweld (fictie, meer informatie vind je hier: https://www.facebook.com/EenGoeieJongen/ ) heb ik om het onderwerp zo accuraat en respectvol mogelijk in beeld te brengen, onderzoek gedaan naar zoveel mogelijk aspecten van seksueel geweld. Al snel werd mij duidelijk dat je individuele gevallen niet los kunt zien van haar maatschappelijke context. Sterker nog, dat kan zelfs gevaarlijk zijn, omdat je door je aandacht op individuele gevallen en die als “uitzonderlijk” te bestempelen, niet de maatschappelijke omstandigheden die een cultuur faciliteren waarin seksueel geweld op grote schaal voorkomt onder de loep neemt en poogt deze te veranderen. In deze vlog leg ik in het kort uit wat bedoeld wordt met de term verkrachtingscultuur en waar deze o.a. uit bestaat, in Nederland.
Disclaimer: Deze vlog heb ik oorspronkelijk gemaakt voor mijn studie, met als doel feministische theorie begrijpelijk en kort aan een mainstream publiek uit een te zetten. Daardoor zijn er wat nuances verloren gegaan, en tevens is mijn taalgebruik nogal binair. Mijn excuses daarvoor.
Rape culture
For our graduation film about sexual violence (fiction, you can find more information here: https://www.facebook.com/EenGoeieJongen ) I did research into as many aspects of sexual violence as possible, to treat the subject with as much accuracy and respect as possible in our film. Very quickly it became clear to me that you can’t see individual cases apart from their social context. This can actually be dangerous, because by focusing on individual cases and thinking they are exceptions you don’t investigate the social circumstances that facilitate a culture in which sexual violence is rampant. In this vlog I explain in short what we mean when we use the word rape culture and what elements make a rape culture, in the Netherlands.
